READ-2-2REVIEW - CONTEMPORARY SUSPSENSE - COLD SILENCE (Silence, #4) by Freya Barker

 Cold Silence
Silence, #4
by Freya Barker
Release Date: May 29th 2026
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book blurb banner for romantic suspense and later in life book Guilty Silence.

Single motherhood to two teenage boys turns out to be far more challenging for Tessa Androtti than her brand-new job as detective for the Edwards County Sheriff’s Department. Especially, when the younger of her sons is keeping her up at night. Not only was the move from the big city supposed to give her a chance to build a new life away from lingering memories, but she had hoped it would be a positive change for her youngest, Remi.

However, just when she’s up to her eyeballs working on a recent violent murder, Remi gets himself into trouble again.

Trouble that appears to be connected to her investigation.

Lifetime resident of Silence, Clem Tanek, couldn’t be more surprised to find one of the new, pretty detective’s sons trespassing and stealing property from behind his auto repair shop. Despite his social awkwardness when interacting with the boy’s mother a few months ago, Clem can handle her kid just fine. Remi’s skills and interest in vehicles provide an opportunity to try and get the kid back onto the right track, without involving law enforcement. It also offers Clem a second chance with the new detective, hoping to make up for that disastrous first encounter.

But their path isn’t an easy one. Both have significant baggage, as one would expect from lives already half lived, and adapting to change can be a challenge. Particularly, when dealing with teenagers which, in this case, means wading into dangerous waters for both Tessa and Clem.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . COLD SILENCE (Silence, #4) . . .  A Realistic, High-Stakes  Romantic Suspense!

Freya Barker does it again! Released just yesterday, Cold Silence is the fourth book in her incredible Silence series, and it delivers exactly what I love and expect from her storytelling. It is packed with real love, deep romance, true-to-life realism, and that beautiful sense of a real-world dream coming true—all wrapped up with a bit of extra suspense to really spice things up!

Dangerous Waters and Second Chances
Single motherhood to two teenage boys is turning out to be a massive challenge for Tessa Androtti—even more challenging than her brand-new job as a detective for the Edwards County Sheriff’s Department. She moved her family away from the big city to escape lingering memories and give her youngest son, Remi, a positive new start. But just as she gets up to her eyeballs investigating a brutal, violent murder, Remi gets himself into trouble again. The most terrifying part? His trouble appears to be directly connected to her murder case.

Clem Tanek is a lifetime resident of Silence and the owner of the local auto repair shop. He is completely shocked to find the new detective's son trespassing and stealing property from his yard. Clem might have been incredibly socially awkward when he first met Tessa a few months ago, but he knows exactly how to handle her kid. Seeing Remi’s natural skill with vehicles, Clem decides to take him under his wing to get him back on the right track without involving the law. It’s the perfect opportunity to guide the kid—and get a much-needed second chance with the beautiful detective after their disastrous first encounter.

But their path is anything but easy. Both Tessa and Clem carry significant baggage from lives already half-lived. Adapting to change is a massive challenge, and when dealing with teenagers, it means wading straight into incredibly dangerous, life-threatening waters.

Why This Gritty, Realistic Romance Hooked Me:
True-to-Life Realism: Freya Barker is a master at writing seasoned romance. Tessa and Clem feel like real people with real responsibilities, real baggage, and authentic mid-life struggles that make their connection feel incredibly grounded.

High-Stakes Suspense: The way Remi's teenage rebellion accidentally tangles up with Tessa's violent murder investigation kept the tension dialed up to a ten. It was an absolute page-turner!

A Heartwarming Dynamic: I loved watching Clem use his mechanic skills to mentor Remi. It showed what a massive, protective heart he has under his awkward exterior, making him the ultimate match for a fierce mama bear like Tessa.

My Final Verdict
Cold Silence earns a very strong 4 stars from me! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, just as I do with all of Freya’s stories. It is a perfect blend of small-town realism, protective romance, and gripping suspense that reminds you it's never too late for a second chance. It provides a truly wonderful, comforting place to lay your head.

Freya Barker always hits the perfect note when it comes to mature, realistic romance with a side of danger!

Bess Choi is proud of what she’s accomplished. Owner of Strange Brew, a popular coffee shop in Silence, she’s worked hard and has overcome many obstacles to build the life she has. It’s a good life, one that includes work she loves, an apartment to call her own, and plenty of good friends.

But an unexpected phone call comes as a brutal reminder of a time she thought she’d left far behind. Suddenly, she’s faced with the choice to turn her back on the beautiful life she created, or break her guilty silence.

Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander isn’t sure when exactly he started seeing the quiet coffee shop owner as more than simply a good friend. It’s hard to pinpoint the moment when she went from a supportive friend to him and his teenage son, to the woman who features in his dreams and fantasies.

Unfortunately, Bess Choi seems to have him firmly locked in the friend zone, and it’s not until worrisome things start happening around her, she cautiously starts lowering the barriers.

But when he discovers she might be in far more danger than she’s been willing to let on, he’s done tiptoeing around.

The Book Junkie reads . . . Review of . . . Guilty Silence (Silence, #3) . . .  ☕ Guilty Silence: A 5-Star Blend of Suspense and Soul!

Freya Barker continues to be a powerhouse in the world of inclusive romance! Her true understanding of "love with no boundaries" shines in this third installment of the Silence series. She doesn't just write romance; she recognizes the complexities of the racial world we live in, making Bess and Hugo’s journey feel deeply authentic and necessary. ☕🛡️✨ ☕ The Coffee Shop Owner and the Deputy Bess Choi is a heroine to admire. She’s built a beautiful life with her shop, Strange Brew, but she’s haunted by a "guilty silence" from a past she thought was buried. When that past comes calling, she has to decide if she can risk the life she’s built to do what’s right. I loved her strength and the way she cautiously lowered her barriers! ☕🛡️ Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander is the ultimate protective hero. A single father who realized his "supportive friend" was actually the woman of his dreams, he’s tired of being in the friend zone. Once he realizes Bess is in danger, the "tiptoeing" is over! Watching a later-in-life romance where the stakes are this high is incredibly satisfying. 🚓👨‍👦 ✨ Why This Installation Wins: The Multi-Racial Dynamics: Freya Barker’s inclusivity is top-tier. She crafts a world where different backgrounds blend seamlessly into a beautiful, high-stakes narrative. 🌏💖 The "Later in Life" Realism: There is a maturity to Hugo and Bess’s connection. It’s not just about "instalove"; it’s about friendship, shared history, and the protective instincts of a man who has something to lose. Heroine in Peril: The suspense kept the pages turning! The "secret past" trope was executed perfectly, making the romantic payoff feel deeply earned. My Final Verdict Guilty Silence is a 5-star masterpiece of Romantic Suspense! It’s "sizzling," grounded, and perfectly highlights why we love Freya Barker. Hugo and Bess prove that no matter how long you’ve been "just friends," or how dark your past is, love has no boundaries when you finally decide to speak up. 🚓☕🔥 Bess and Hugo were such a powerful pair!

READ-2-REVIEW - CONTEMPORARY - THE ROSE AND THE CROWN (Good Girls, Bad Boys, #1) by Evelyn Sola

The Rose and the Crown
Good Girls, Bad Boys #1
Evelyn Sola
January 9th 2026

BLURB
In the small, quiet town of Shadow Cove, appearances hide dark secrets — and new beginnings can spark deadly games.

Eden Rose, a dedicated physical therapist and the sheriff’s daughter, never expected to cross paths with a reckless motorcycle biker with a criminal past. When Ripley King saves her from being drugged at his nightclub, a dangerous obsession ignites. His tattoos and leather-clad danger draw her in, but his involvement in illegal activities threatens to destroy everything she loves.

As Ripley's need to claim her grows, Eden fears her carefully crafted world, her family's reputation, and her sense of safety will come apart. She aches to believe in their love, but the darker truths of Shadow Cove—her father's world and Ripley's secrets—push her to the edge. Can their passion withstand the chaos, or will the weight of her fears bury them both before they even have a chance?

The Rose and the Crown is the first installment in the Good Girls, Bad Boys series — a pull-no-punches tale of desire, danger, and the fight to trust in a small town where everyone’s hiding something.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . THE ROSE AND THE CROWN (Good Girls, Bad Boys, #1) . . .  🌹 The Rose and the Crown: Where Danger Meets Irresistible Desire!

If you’re looking for a romance that shatters boundaries and proves love has no limits, Evelyn Sola’s The Rose and the Crown is an absolute must-read. As the first installment in the Good Girls, Bad Boys series, Sola brings Shadow Cove to life—a small town where the secrets are dark, the stakes are deadly, and the chemistry is off the charts.

Eden Rose is the "Good Girl" personified—a dedicated physical therapist and the sheriff’s daughter. But her carefully constructed world is turned upside down when she crosses paths with Ripley "Rip" King. He’s everything her father warns her about: a tattooed, leather-clad biker with a criminal past.

Their story doesn't just start; it ignites. When Rip saves Eden from a dangerous situation at his nightclub, a dangerous obsession begins. Sola masterfully explores the "Good Girl/Bad Boy" trope, allowing the lines between right and wrong to blur until they disappear entirely.

What makes this IRR (BWWM) story stand out is how Evelyn Sola handles the connection between Rip and Eden. It isn't just a simple coming together; it’s a collision of two different worlds.

The Conflict: Can a sheriff’s daughter truly trust a man whose life is built on illegal activities?

The Depth: Sola doesn't shy away from the "darker truths" of Shadow Cove. She allows her characters to cross lines and face the consequences of their passion.

The Hero: Rip is a "Bad Boy" with a protective streak that will make your heart race. His need to claim Eden is fierce, raw, and utterly captivating.

Blurred Lines: It’s a pull-no-punches tale where the "good" girl finds herself drawn to the "bad" side.

Small Town Intrigue: Shadow Cove is a character in its own right, filled with secrets that threaten to bury our leads.

Fearless Writing: Sola’s writing is refreshing because it focuses on the soul of the characters, proving that passion is the ultimate universal language.

My Final Verdict: The Rose and the Crown is an intense emotional rollercoaster. It’s a story of desire, danger, and the fight to trust when the whole world is watching. If you want a romance that is as gritty as it is sexy, Rip and Eden’s story is waiting for you!

READ-2-REVIEW - CONTEMPORARY SUSPENSE - INSIDE SILENCE (Silence, #2) by Freya Barker

 Inside Silence

Silence Series , #2
by Freya Barker
Release Date: October 27th 2025
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Savannah (Savvy) Colter is not easily overwhelmed, which is a good thing, since she is the sheriff of Edwards County. It’s rare to find someone her age— a woman to boot—carrying such responsibility, but over the years, Savvy has more than proven herself worthy of the position…to most.

However, when in a matter of a few weeks an old flame resurfaces in Silence, and two particularly violent murders land on her desk, her steady and predictable life becomes a little much to handle.

New full-time single parent, Nate Gaines, reluctantly returns to his hometown, Silence, to offer his teenage daughter some much-needed stability. As a contractor he can work anywhere, and it’s not like he left a particularly fulfilling life behind, but he’s not too sure how much work he’s going to get here.

Although, some of the changes he encounters in Silence are a surprise. The most shocking one is seeing the woman he once craved like air, now wearing the sheriff’s badge he so despises.

Coming home is definitely not turning out the way he’d envisioned. Especially when a sudden crime spree has the law knocking on his door…again.

The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . INSIDE SILENCE (Silence, #2) . . . The Badge and the Broken: A High-Stakes Second Chance for Two Adults With Too Much History.

For those of us who appreciate a romance where the characters have actually lived some life and carry the scars and wisdom that enrich a relationship, Freya Barker is a must-read, and Inside Silence is no exception. This book takes the angsty premise of a second-chance romance and embeds it deep within a gritty, high-stakes romantic suspense setting.

We meet Savannah (Savvy) Colter, a woman who has earned her powerful role as County Sheriff. She's competent, steady, and exactly the kind of strong heroine we love. Yet, her carefully constructed life is shattered not just by two violent murders, but by the unwelcome, chaotic return of her "old flame," Nate Gaines.

Nate's situation is immediately complex and deeply sympathetic: a new full-time single parent desperately seeking stability for his teenage daughter. But Nate's baggage is heavy; he despises the badge Savvy wears, and his history means the law is knocking on his door...again. This is not a fluffy reunion. It’s a collision.

What makes this story compelling for an adult-focused reader is the immense, dual pressure on both characters:

  • Savvy must find the killer while compartmentalizing the intense pull toward the man who once "craved her like air," even as he becomes a person of interest in a crime spree.

  • Nate must confront his past, swallowing his contempt for law enforcement, and realize that the stability he seeks might only come by trusting the very woman whose job he despises.

This is a story about the hard work of rekindled love, where old passions meet new realities and deep-seated grudges. If you appreciate a narrative where the emotional stakes are as high as the suspense, and where bruised but capable characters fight to earn their slice of happy, you'll be captivated by this tense, heartfelt journey back to the small town of Silence.

Freya Barker brings to life romance of adults that have lived some life and have something more to give. I absolutely love her blend of romance with hints of suspense, and this first book in her new series is a fantastic start! It features adults that have lived life, bringing a richness to their story.

With this release we meet Phil and Brant. Both are in the same small town one a but out loud and the other a little low-key. There was a little something that brings them both together. The characters are wonderfully relatable, and neither Phil nor Brant disappointed! They are both drawn together in the same small town, yet for entirely different reasons. Their dynamic is captivating, with one being a bit more out loud and the other wonderfully low-key, creating a fantastic balance. This book was a quick, engrossing read—perfect for a one-sitting escape. The story was truly entertaining from beginning to end, and I was happy with where they left off.

Finding Silence was not a long drawn out romance. It was a one-sitting read with a beginning with an ending that made you happy. Neither of out leading people disappointed you.
